The Christian apocalypse is interpreted in many ways, but it states in the Book of Revelation, that the first seal that is opened releases a horseman riding a white horse. This horseman is here to conquer, and conquering he does. Many interpret this first horseman as the the antichrist rising to power. In the piece “Doomsday”, Gutierrez mixes both the literal and the metaphorical imager of the bible. Many scholars attribute the antichrist of the bible to the real-life Nero of Rome. A tyrannical leader persecuting people who he sought to blame. The details in “Doomsday” seek to provide a present-day representation of the end of the world.

Studying the end times of the Bible, Gutierrez was in constant fear of God, heaven, and all things holy. Everyday he waited for the horseman to arrive in the driveway. Every big noise or sharp sound got mistook for the trumpet of Revelation. As someone who was pushed away from the church, who do you pray to for salvation now? It seems that no one is here to save us from ourselves. As the world suffers, the line between Holy and Evil starts to blur. There’s love in our hearts, but that seems irrelevant to whether we burn at the judgement of others or not.
